KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A Kansas man has won $4 million in the Missouri Lottery. Michael Schulte of De Soto hit it big after spending $20 on a scratch-off ticket at a convenience store on the Missouri side of State Line Road in Kansas City.

Schulte claimed his prize at the Kansas City Lottery office on July 25. He has the option of a 20-year annuity or a lump-sum payment of $2.6 million.

He was playing the “$4,000,000 Cash Spectacular.” He bought the ticket at the QuikTrip at 8011 State Line Road, in Kansas City.

This is not Schulte’s first winner. The Missouri Lottery Web site reports he won $1,000 earlier, also on a Missouri scratch-off ticket.

This is the third big lottery winner in Kansas in just over a week. Officials say someone in northeastern Kansas bought a one-million dollar Powerball ticket in Saturday’s drawing. And a week earlier, Nelson Worley, 43, of Osawatomie, Kansas won $1 million, after matching five numbers on a Powerball ticket.

SJPD patchSt Joseph Police are investigating two assault cases that happened Sunday. One of them occurred after a pickup basketball game, and the other one involved a baseball bat.

Commander Janice Rothganger says a 43-year-old man was assaulted near St Joseph Avenue and Grand Avenue around 6:40 pm Sunday.

“A white male subject, approximately 26 years old, saw the victim, and believed the victim had stolen from him,” Rothganger said. “the victim ran away but was assaulted with a bat.”

The victim was transported to Heartland Regional Medical Center for treatment of head injuries. He was later released.

Rothganger says patrons of the First Ward House nightclub were able to identify the suspect and secure the weapon.

“They pointed out the suspect, and confirmed he was the suspect,” Rothganger said. “He had tossed the baseball bat before we arrived, and they collected it and turned it over to us on our arrival.”

Charges were expected in the case but had not been filed by mid-afternoon Monday.

In another assault Sunday, a man was stabbed twice in the hand by an apparent sore loser after a pickup basketball game.

“He and his friends were playing basketball against another team,” Rothganger said.

“The victim’s team won, and the suspect began arguing with the victim, then pulled out a knife. He stuck the victim two times in the hand as the victim tried to defend himself.”

The victim was taken to Heartland, where he was treated for two puncture wounds to the hand and later released.

The suspect fled the scene. He is described as possibly an Asian or Micronesian male wearing a ponytail.

If you help police you can call the TIPS Hotline, (816)238-TIPS, or call police at (816) 271-4777. Rothganger says you can also send a private message to police. On Twitter, send it to “SJPD Info.” On Facebook, use “Saint Joseph Missouri Police Department.”

Michael Engstrom Jamie Engstrom

A southeast Nebraska woman will serve five years in prison for child abuse in connection with a police pursuit and shootout last February.

Jamie D. Russell Engstrom, age 35, appeared in the District Court of Johnson County, Nebraska, on Monday, August 5, to be sentenced on a charge of Felony child abuse for allowing her daughter to remain in the vehicle during the pursuit.

Engstrom was the passenger in a Ford Focus allegedly driven by her husband, Michael Engstrom during a police pursuit on February 13, 2013 in which two state troopers and three employees of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office were allegedly shot at.

She pleaded guilty to child abuse on April 15, for “knowingly, intentionally, or negligently causing or permitting a 14-year-old female [passenger] to be placed in a situation that endangered her life or physical or mental health.” The charge carried a maximum prison sentence of 5 years. Ms. Engstrom was sentenced to 5 years in prison without the possibility of parole.

Ms. Engstrom has been continuously incarcerated at the Johnson County Jail since February 13. According to Johnson County Attorney Julie D. Smith, Monday’s sentencing means that she will be transported to the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women in York, Nebraska, to serve her prison sentence.

Her husband Michael Engstrom has been charged with 19 felonies, including five counts of attempted murder in relation to the incident. He has pleaded not guilty, and his case is set for jury trial on September 9 in Tecumseh.

The Engstroms also are charged with a fatal shooting in Topeka, Kansas earlier that day and a subsequent robbery in Pawnee County, Nebraska.

A woman sentenced to five years for child abuse in Tecumseh, Nebraska, for allowing her daughter to remain in her car during a police chase and shootout, was also sentenced this week for the robbery in Pawnee City that led to the pursuit.

Authorities in southeastern Nebraska say District Court Judge Daniel Bryan sentenced Jamie Engstrom in both cases on Monday.

Engstrom pleaded guilty in Pawnee County to a reduced charge of attempted robbery.

She received a six to ten year prison term, to be served at the same time as her prison term in Johnson County for Child Abuse.

She and her husband Michael Engstrom are also charged with murder in Topeka, Kansas.

Pawnee County Attorney Jennifer Stehlik Ladman says Michael Engstrom is scheduled for jury trial Monday on robbery and weapons charges.

Authorities say the couple robbed a Pawnee City gas station at gunpoint during the evening hours of February 13, 2013, taking gasoline, merchandise, and an undisclosed amount of cash .

The pursuit and shootout began soon thereafter.

Engstrom’s 14-year-old daughter remained in the car during the robbery, and the police chase, according to prosecutors. Officials do not expect the teenager to be charged.

Johnson County Attorney Julie D. Smith said the 35-year-old woman pleaded guilty to child abuse on April 15, for “knowingly, intentionally, or negligently causing or permitting a 14-year-old female [passenger] to be placed in a situation that endangered her life or physical or mental health.”

She was sentenced Monday morning to five years without parole. That afternoon, Judge Bryan pronounced sentence in the Pawnee County case, ordering a six to ten year prison term. Jamie Engstrom will be transported to the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women in York, Nebraska, to serve her prison sentences.

“Every Parent’s Nightmare”

Chevaldric Williams

Chevaldric Williams

A former Army recruiter will be sentenced October 4 for statutory rape and statutory sodomy of a 15-year-old girl in a case the prosecutor called “every parent’s nightmare.”

The Platte County Circuit Court jury returned guilty verdicts August 7 against Chervaldric Williams, 38, of Kansas City.

Evidence showed the pair met at a movie theater in october of 2009, and the following night.

Platte County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Zahnd says Williams picked the girl up after her parents had gone to sleep so she could sneak out more easily. The parents noticed she was gond, and began frantically calling her friends. Finally they used cell phone billing records to call the numbers that appeared just before she was discovered missing.

One of those numbers belonged to Williams, who initially denied knowing her. He then called them back, pointing out that he was a “stand-up guy” and would never do anything to hurt their daughter.

“This is every parent’s nightmare,” Zahnd said.

“Their child disappeared in the dark of night, and they find out that she was victimized by someone who enjoyed a position of trust and responsibility in both the United States Army and in the North Kansas City School District.”

DNA evidence was critical in this case and conclusively identified the defendant. A DNA specialist with the Kansas City Police Department crime lab testified that DNA found on the victim’s shirt was a one in 18 quintillion match to Williams.

At trial, Williams denied any sexual contact with the victim, claiming that she attempted to sexually molest him, but that he was able to fend off her advances before fleeing. He was unable to explain how his DNA wound up on the victim’s shirt.

Zahnd credited hard work by a detective with the Kansas City Police Department’s Crimes Against Children section and the Kansas City Police Crime Laboratory. “Their dedication and professionalism led to the collection of critical DNA evidence allowing us to convict this rapist,” he said.

Zahnd also noted that both the North Kansas City School District and the United States Army reacted appropriately to the initial allegations against Williams. He was immediately suspended from his recruiting duties and the Army initiated its own proceedings against him.

Williams faces up to 14 years in prison when he’s sentenced on October 4, 2013.
