A passenger on a Harley rolling through Harrison County Wednesday afternoon should consider herself lucky. Luck and some savvy driving likely prevented more serious injuries in a crash at about 4:30 pm south of Blythedale.

Darlene Palmer, 39, of Kimberline was riding with Larry Taff, 63, of Blythedale, when a deer crossed onto Route T.

The animal hit the motorcycle and Palmer’s leg, but Taff was able to keep the bike upright and come to a controlled stop.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports Palmer was treated for minor injuries at the Harrison County Community Hospital in Bethany. Taff was not hurt.

Liberty police report they have found a body tentatively identified as that of Chad Rogers, the runner who disappeared on Monday.

In a news conference Friday afternoon, Sergeant Robert Kumpost, the Public Information Officer for the Liberty Police Department said his department responded to a suspicious circumstances call near the South Valley Junior High School, 800 MidJay Drive in Liberty.

Kumpost told reporters a body was found in a portable bathroom at a road construction site.   He said they are not ruling out that the body could be that of the missing runner.  The investigation now moves to the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office, which will determine the identity of the body and the cause of death.  Kumpost did not answer questions.

The following message appeared on the “Bring Chad Rogers Home” page on Facebook this afternoon:

“Friends, it is with a very heavy heart that I communicate that the Liberty Police Department has tentatively located the body of Chad Rogers. The cause is not known at this time. The search has been called off. Please give the family space over the next few days as they process through the difficulty of this time.

“In the coming days there will be information regarding contributing financially toward the family. We will post when we have that information. Thank you for your search efforts over the last 4 days. You’ve been very helpful throughout the process.”

A huge group of volunteers had been searching for the missing runner since he turned up missing on Monday.

Officer Injured In “Routine Traffic Stop”

SJPD badge with flagOfficer Brian McClintick of the St Joseph Police Department refused medical treatment after he was hurt during what started as a routine traffic stop.

Commander Janice Rothganger says Officer McClintick pulled over a pickup truck near Gene Field and Woodbine at about 2:23 am Friday.

The truck did not have working tail lights and had problems with the license plates.

The driver took off as he was speaking with the officer. The vehicle his officer McClintick, but luckily pushed him off to the side.

“He was able to determine where the suspects were headed,” Rothganger said.

“He found the vehicle. It had crashed through a wooden fence, in the 1500 block of Randolph, and was parked, abandoned in a back yard.”

Rothganger says the suspects have been identified, but remain at large. If you have information that could help, call the TIPS hotline at (816) 238-TIPS.

Rotherganger says all traffic stops carry a certain amount of risk.

“Officers always have to prepare in their mind, to have a backup plan, to get out of a situation if it doesn’t go the way that they wanted to.”

United Way logoThe United Way of St Joseph is hoping you’ll lend a hand for its annual “Stuff The Bus” school supplies drive August 2 and 3. They’re looking for volunteers on Friday from 8am to 7pm, and Saturday 8am until 5:30 pm.

You’ll be working with coordinators to collect donated school supplies from the community during this year’s tax-free weekend.

School buses will be parked outside both St Joseph Walmart stores.

United Way officials say you will be asked to work shifts of one hour, 45 minutes at a time. Some volunteers will inform shoppers of the drive at the store entrances, others will collect donations at the exits.  They still have more than 100 slots available.

Visit their Web site stjosephunitedway.org for more information. If you’re interested, contact Linda Burns, the United Way Director of Community Engagement, at (816)364-2381, or by E-mail at linda.burns@stjosephunitedway.org.

Authorities in Maryville are seeking help solve a cold-case murder.

Director of Public Safety Keith Wood says investigators are still hopeful for justice for Teresa Sue “Tess” Hilt of Chillicothe, who was found strangled and stabbed in her north Maryville apartment August 4, 1973.

Hilt was 22 years old. She had just graduated from Northwest Missouri State University with a degree in Elementary Education, and had started work on her Masters.

Wood says recent events such as the posting of a Facebook page in her honor have yielded some new information and re-stimulated the investigative efforts.

“Friends” of the Facebook page have speculated and wondered what the life of Tess might have been over the last 40 years had her life not been abruptly and prematurely ended.

If you hav information, you are urged to call Maryville Public Safety at (660)562-3209 or email Tips4Tess@aol.com.

Further information may be obtained via Tess Hilt Facebook page, justicefortess.com and defrostingcoldcases.com.

Prosecutor: Cat Drowning Legal

Platte County SealLAKE WAUKOMIS, Mo. (AP) — Platte County Prosecutor Eric Zahnd says Missouri state law does not allow him to charge a Kansas man who drowned a cat in Lake Waukomis.

Thomas Newhouse of Shawnee, Kan., admitted to Lake Waukomis police that he placed the cat in a carrier and drowned it July 14. He said the cat had bitten and scratched a family member.

The case was referred to Zahnd’s office after what the prosecutor called a “significant public outcry.” Zahnd said that his office had received numerous calls and emails. More than 1,200 people signed an online petition seeking Newhouse’s prosecution for a felony.

But Zahnd said Missouri’s animal abuse law does not apply to the killing of an animal by the owner or the owner’s agent.
