Livingston County Sheriff Steve Cox says he’s lost “an outstanding deputy” to the better pay at Chillicothe Police Department.

Cox accepted the resignation of Deputy Ryan Ford, who started with the Sheriff’s Office in March of 2012. Cox says Livingston County receives a supplement grant for deputy sheriff pay, but there is still a substantial difference between the benefits, costs of benefits to employees, and base pay between the two government entities.

“Deputy Ford told me he has no choice but to change jobs as he has to provide for his family,” Cox said in a news release. “The combined difference amounts to about $512 per month before taxes.”

So Cox has put out another help-wanted ad on the county’s Web site. www.livcoso.org under employment opportunities.

The investigation into a child enticement last December leads to child pornography charges against a Chillicothe man.

Livingston County Sheriff Steve Cox announced the additional charges against Michael Curtis, 33, after his investigators seized “computers and/or cell phones” and the lab found child pornography on one or more of them.

Curtis is scheduled for a trial-setting April 15 for felony enticement of a child under 15 years old.

Next week, a judge is expected to schedule a preliminary hearing on an additional count of Possession of Child Pornography. Both charges are class-C felonies.

Missouri AD Mike Alden up for national award

MUUniversity of Missouri Director of Athletics Mike Alden has been named a finalist for the Sports Business Journal Athletic Director of the Year Award, as announced by Sports Business Journal.

Alden, in his 16th season leading Mizzou Athletics (second only in longest tenure at MU to the legendary Don Faurot, who served as A.D. for 27 years from 1935-42 and 1946-66), is one of five up for the award, which will be presented at a ceremony on May 21st in New York City.

The 2014 nominees are being recognized for excellence and outstanding achievement in the business of sports for the period of March 1, 2013, to Feb. 28, 2014.  During that window, Mizzou has won Southeastern Conference championships in football and volleyball, as well as a Mid-American Conference title in wrestling.  Mizzou also ranked second in the SEC in Academic Progress Rate when reports were released in June of 2013, and later that month, Alden was named president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics for the 2013-14 season.

The A.D. award will be judged by the editorial staff of Sports Business Journal.  Alden is a finalist along with Greg Byrne (Arizona), Judy Rose (UNC-Charlotte), Kevin White (Duke) and Scott Woodward (Washington).

“I’m very honored to be among this group of outstanding leaders,” said Alden.  “To be a finalist for this kind of award says more about our organization and the type of leaders we have than it does about me personally.  We’re very proud of what we have built at Mizzou, and we will continue to work very hard to represent Mizzou in a way that brings pride to the people of Missouri.  We’re grateful for this recognition, and certainly wish all the other finalists the best,” he said.

Screen Shot 2014-03-23 at 6.48.29 AMWe’re watching the potential for another round of winter weather expected to hit the area during the day on Monday. This storm will be a fast mover but for the 12 or so hours it’s moving across the region it will produce several inches of snow, mainly across the northern tier of Missouri. The heaviest amounts are expected to be along and north of Highway 36, where amounts could range from 1 to 2 inches. Further south, a dusting to about an inch is possible. The good news is that Spring should be back through the remainder of the week. Temperatures warm into the 40s and 50s on Wednesday which will quickly melt the snow.
Today Sunny, with a high near 39. North northeast wind 5 to 8 mph.
Sunday night Partly cloudy, with a low around 27. East southeast wind 6 to 9 mph.
Monday Rain and snow likely, mainly before 1pm. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 39. Southeast wind 8 to 14 mph becoming west northwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.
Monday Night Partly cloudy, with a low around 23. Northwest wind 7 to 11 mph.
Tuesday Sunny, with a high near 37. North northwest wind 9 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph.
Tuesday Night Mostly clear, with a low around 24.
Wednesday Mostly sunny, with a high near 57. Breezy.

SJPD patchA fight outside the bars in the 500 block of Felix St. kept emergency responders busy early Sunday morning.

Sergeant Keith Dudley of the St Joseph Police Department said a male victim was lying in the street when he arrived shortly before 1am. The man regained consciousness with the help of paramedics, and was taken to Heartland Regional Medical Center with what Dudley described as moderate injuries.

“When we talked to him he didn’t remember what happened,” Dudley said. A woman was also transported to Heartland with what were believed at the scene to be minor injuries. A third victim refused medical treatment. Dudley says alcohol appears to have played a large part in the incident.

Dudley reports no arrests as the investigation continues.

Facebook Rape Case In Northwest Missouri Prompts Calls For Caution

facebookThis Wednesday two suspects will appear in court accused of a sexual assault that would not have been possible without Facebook.

A facebook “friend,” along with a suspended police officer, are accused of drugging and raping a Livingston County woman.

We spoke with Detective Josh Howery, of the St Joseph Police Department’s electronic-crimes unit. Howery urges caution when hooking up online.

“You only know about that person what they’re willing to share,” Howery said. “It’s not until you do your own research that you can find out more. But until then that’s all you know.”

“We would just tell people to do their homework, be looking for red flags, and trust your gut. It’s usually right.”

While we hear about these meetings turning violent in other areas of the country, and on other social media Web sites, Howery says that sort of thing is not common in Northwest Missouri. But the Livingston County case reminds us that it’s possible anywhere.

He discourages giving out your home address to an online friend, because they may not be who they claim to be.

“People can be anybody they want to online,” Howery says

“Don’t allow yourself to be a victim. If you arrange public meetings, and if you’re still skeptical, bring a friend.”

“Ask questions, and demand answers, and if you don’t get them, walk away.”

Amanda Gault and Brent Schade were charged last week in connection with a horrific sex assault case that started with a meeting on Facebook. Click here for more.
