Price_Chopper_LogoPrice Chopper is one step closer to opening its doors in St. Joseph.

Planning and Community Development Director, Clint Thompson said the Planning Commission approved plans for the future infrastructure of a 88,000 square foot Price Chopper to be built in the location of the old Plaza 8 Theater.

The commission voted unanimously on a vote of 8-0 Thursday with Chairman Todd Euler abstaining because of his ties as the co-owner of St. Joseph’s Apple Market stores.

Thompson said the approval allows the developer to present the cite plan that shows how the infrastructure will be in place and allow the city to review the overall concept of the project.

He said before the project is completed the developer will have to come back to get final approval.

However, Thompson said the community can expect to start to see demolition on the old Plaza 8 location sometime in the next several months.

“The new building will be more in-line with Anderson Ford and the strip mall,” Thompson said.

He said he expects the new facility to open sometime in mid-2016.
