neon5The latest exhibit at the International Trucking Service Extra Fine Art Gallery is exciting and dangerous, an eye-popping display of some unusual works crafted in neon.

Gallery owner Json Myers tells us Kansas City artist Thomas Cobain, also known as The Neon Warrior, learned his craft making beer ads, “open” signs and other neon objects. But Myers says Cobain branched into the “extra fine art” world through his inner passion and contact with other artists.

Over the course of the next ten years or so, Cobain crafted work that is both startling and visually fascinating.

Included are a neon cross within a hollowed out bible, piano strings that activate the neon when played, a bicycle that generates the power to light the neon tubes, and another kinetic piece with sparks jumping through space to complete the circuit.

The International Trucking Service Extra Fine Art Gallery is located at 803 Francis Street. A formal grand opening is scheduled to coincide with this weekend’s “First Saturday” activities in downtown St Joseph December 6.
