A local version of a chain gang could soon be cleaning up Buchanan County roads. Undersheriff Bill Puett says using inmates to pick up trash and clean up illegal dump sites is something Sheriff Mike Strong has wanted to do for nine years.
Working with the county commissioners and judges, the sheriff’s office has cleared the way for the program to get started, possibly as early as next week. Puett says it will begin with a team of four low-risk inmates who could earn some perks, including time off for good behavior.
